The Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer is an Austrian made multi-use vehicle sold both to civilian and military customers. It is decended form the famous Hafflinger, and in many aspects is just a larger version of that vehicle.
The Swiss Army was one of the largest users of the Pinz, and when they converted to a domestic diesel vehicle their large stock of 70's vintage vehicles were auctioned off. Many of these made it to the US, with less interest from Europe due to the higher gas costs and preference for diesel.
The Pinz is an extremely capable offroad vehicle with it's portal axles, front and rear locking diffs, central tube independent suspension, and excellent approach/departure angles. While the unique design does not lend itself to lift kits like conventional 4x4's, in many aspects that type of modification is simply not needed. As a bonus, the Pinz retains excellent road manners compared to other vehicles from the early 70's, and has many features like power brakes and 5 speed transmission that were very rare in 4x4's at that time.
